Scaling & Root Planing

Scaling and root planing is a two-part process that requires removing the bacteria as well as encouraging reattachment over time. When gingivitis develops, our team can use scaling to clean above and below the gumline before smoothing out the tooth roots to allow for the gums to reattach to your teeth as well as reduce the chances of bacteria accumulating in the area again. The process can be completed in one or two visits depending on the severity of your case.

Laser Periodontal Therapy

Laser periodontal therapy is a newer method of treatment that many dentists, including Dr. Upton, are pleased to provide. Instead of relying on traditional scalpels and sutures, our soft tissue laser uses a concentrated beam of light to target bad bacteria that are attacking your gum tissue. Because the beam of light is so precise, there is virtually no discomfort, and it helps to cauterize the area the moment it touches your gums. This helps to minimize the amount of time spent in recovery, which is a welcomed thought for most patients.

Antibiotic Therapy

To fully eliminate bacteria even in the deepest crevices, we will recommend antibiotic therapy alongside your scaling and root planing deep cleaning. By taking this antibiotic treatment, the medicine will target any remaining bacteria over several weeks, allowing your mouth to heal more effectively.
